Arabs conquered most of present day Jordan in the 7th Century AD,
the Ottomans took control in the 16th Century. In 1921 Abdullah,
son of the ruler of Hejaz in Arabia was installed by Britain as
Emir of an autonomous Transjordan. An independent kingdom was
declared in 1946. During the 1948 Arab-Israeli war the West Bank
and the old city of Jerusalem were annexed to the Kingdom which
changed its name to Jordan. All these territories were lost in
the 1967 war and caused thousands of refugees to settle in
western Jordan. King Hussein of Jordan saw in these refugees' growing
influence in his Kingdom a threat to his authority. In September 1971,
the Jordanian army fought the Palestinian guerillas out of Jordan into
Lebanon in what is now known as Black September.
Jordan has received allowances of oil money from other Arab nations in
appreciation for its support of the Palestinian cause.
The United States also provides substantial aid. King Hussein
actively promoted the rejection of the Israel-Egypt peace treaty
and became the first nation to sever relations with Egypt in
March 1979. However in September 1984, full diplomatic relations were
restored and strongly maintained until today. @
